5 Questions With… Mathanje

1. What’s your name, where are you from, and what’s your role at Tanzania Specialist?

My name is Mathanje Meulemans. I’m from the Netherlands and have been involved with Tanzania Specialist since its inception.

In the early years, my husband Robbin and I were personally responsible for all aspects of the organization — from advising clients on their safari trips to managing the administrative processes. The idea to embark on this adventure came to life in June 2015, when we traveled to Tanzania together for the first time. It had always been my dream to visit this beautiful country because I had read that Tanzania is the most stunning safari destination in the world. During that first trip, we immediately fell in love with the country, the nature, and the culture. The idea of starting a safari company was born — and Tanzania Specialist came to life.

Over the years, I’ve shifted my focus more toward the financial side of the company and now concentrate on developing and implementing innovations and improvements. I’m also responsible for organizing tailor-made safaris for larger groups, such as corporate events.

In recent years, we’ve opened our own lodges, allowing us to offer guests a truly unique experience. We continue to strive for the highest standards of service and quality, so every guest has an unforgettable safari — all at an attractive price.

I currently live half the year in Tanzania and half in the Netherlands with my family. We have three children: Teddy (8), Coco (5), and Dre (5 months). Living between two worlds is a special experience that gives us the chance to embrace both Tanzanian culture and Dutch life.

2. What’s your favorite destination in Tanzania and why?

Actually, each national park in Tanzania has its own unique characteristics and is definitely worth visiting. But if you don’t have much safari experience yet, I’d personally recommend Ndutu — especially when the migration is there. What makes this area so special is the ability to drive off-road, which gives you the freedom to explore different landscapes, from open plains to lakes. It’s also an ideal location to experience spectacular sunsets.

For those who already have more safari experience or are looking for something different, I highly recommend Mkomazi. This park offers a fantastic combination of adventure and conservation, with the unique opportunity to visit the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary. This protected area plays a crucial role in black rhino conservation and is one of the few places where you can see these majestic animals in the wild. Mkomazi is also known for its population of African wild dogs, making it perfect for wildlife enthusiasts seeking rare species.

Although the lodges in Mkomazi are a bit simpler, the combination of conservation and the chance to see these iconic animals makes it a truly special place. The park is quiet and less crowded — ideal for those seeking a more intimate safari experience.

Mathanje’s Favorite Activities

From a peaceful bush dinner under Serengeti skies to soaking in natural hot springs and exploring Arusha’s vibrant culture — these are Mathanje’s go-to experiences for connection and relaxation.

3. Which safari experience would you recommend to someone visiting for the first time?

It depends on your budget and how much time you have. If you’re working with a smaller budget or limited time, I would recommend Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater. But if your budget allows, adding a few days in the Serengeti is absolutely worth it. Each of these parks offers something unique.

Tarangire National Park is famous for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. It offers a peaceful safari atmosphere with many chances to spot wildlife up close.

The Ngorongoro Crater is truly a natural wonder, with one of the highest concentrations of wildlife per square kilometer. It’s one of the best places to see the Big Five — and your chances of spotting a rhino in the wild are higher here than in most other parks.

If possible, don’t miss Serengeti National Park. This is where you can witness the famous Great Migration — one of the world’s most incredible natural spectacles. Every year, millions of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move through the park. The Serengeti is also one of the best places to see big cats like lions and cheetahs. Its landscapes are breathtaking and often featured in National Geographic for a reason.

Together, these three parks offer a perfect introduction to Tanzania’s rich wildlife and natural beauty.

4. What’s the most unforgettable wildlife moment you’ve had?

There are so many unforgettable moments that it’s hard to choose just one. Every safari is unique, and each trip creates memories that stay with you forever — especially when shared with your partner, family, or friends.

The moments that stand out the most for me are the ones I’ve spent in the bush with my loved ones. I remember one magical sunset in particular — glass of wine in hand, gazing at the horizon as hippos slowly emerged from the water and the sun shimmered on the river.

And then there were the evenings around the bushfire. We’d sit around the campfire with a guitar, singing songs and listening to the sounds of the wilderness. The warmth of the fire, the smell of nature, and the presence of animals nearby made those nights truly unforgettable.

And of course, the nighttime sounds — the deep roar of a lion, zebras and wildebeest grazing around your tent, and the laughter of hyenas in the distance. These sounds stay with you — and make me long for the wilds of Africa again and again.

Mathanje’s Favorite Itineraries

Whether it’s a family safari, a luxury fly-in escape, or the challenge of Kilimanjaro, these curated routes reflect Mathanje’s love for balance, beauty, and meaningful adventure.

5. Is there a destination in Tanzania you haven’t been to yet but would love to explore one day?

One place I would still love to explore is Mount Kilimanjaro. It seems like an incredible experience to climb this iconic mountain. I love challenging myself, and summiting Kilimanjaro would be the adventure of a lifetime. It’s both a physical and mental challenge — and one I hope to share with my girlfriends someday. I’m sure that after a journey like that, we’d have a lifetime of unforgettable memories together.

Bonus: What’s one tip you always share with guests before they travel to Tanzania?

My biggest tip is to go on safari with children! Kids are fascinated by animals and love driving through nature in a big safari jeep. I often hear people say they want to wait until their kids are older — but it’s just as magical with younger children. Of course, it helps to choose lodges with kid-friendly amenities, like swimming pools.

I also recommend taking your time. Make space in your itinerary not just for the safari, but also to enjoy the beautiful lodges and their surroundings.

Another helpful tip is to include a rest day in Arusha. It’s a great way to explore the city, go on a local tour, and soak in a different side of Tanzania. For children especially, it’s an eye-opening experience to see the contrast between Western life and everyday life in Arusha.

And finally: be clear about your safari preferences upfront. That way, your trip can be fully customized — and even more unforgettable.
