Hakuna Matata Academy

The Hakuna Matata Academy believes that knowledge is power. Launched in 2022, the HMA is an on-the-ground initiative created by the founders of Tanzania Specialist. Located next to their office in Arusha, HMA offers specialised hospitality training programs to both vulnerable street kids and professionals working in the hospitality and tourism sector. The Hakuna Matata Academy is the first of its kind in Tanzania.

Knowledge is power

The Hakuna Matata Academy:

  • Gives trainings and opportunities to vulnerable street kids
  • Creates fulfilling career opportunities for Tanzanians in the growing tourism sector
  • Gives extra trainings to guides about wildlife and professional customer service
  • Promotes sustainable business practices throughout Tanzania for a healthy and happy country
  • Stimulates economic growth through higher-quality services and professionalism in the travel and tourism sector.

“We started the Hakuna Matata Academy (HMA), because of the wish to make a positive impact in Tanzania. HMA offers opportunities to vulnerable street kids as well as people working in tourism. Eventually, Tanzania Specialist wants to improve the level of service and the sustainability of the tourism sector. Because making impact in a sustainable way helps both the people and the environment!”

Robbin Meulemans, founder Tanzania Specialist

A blueprint for success

The Hakuna Matata Academy currently has six trainers. The academy offers professionals from each of the 80 lodges partnered with Tanzania Specialist a spot in its professional training and mentoring programs. After receiving a one-month theoretical and practical training from local and international sector experts, the HMA graduates are equipped with a varied and professional skill set that improves service in the lodges and provides the graduate with exciting opportunities for professional growth. In addition, 200 young adults coming from vulnerable groups are currently professionally trained to follow internships at the 80 participating lodges. Their training takes one year and this year 100 participants managed to start their internships.

The Hakuna Matata Academy is financed with support from the DeveloPPP program of DEG Impulse, a German investment organization for developing countries that is financed by the German Federal for Economic Cooperation and Development.
