The relatively unknown Empakaai crater lies just some 40km North-East of its famous neighbor, the Ngorongoro Crater. The crater lake, which draws flamingos and other water birds, fills most of the crater floor, which is surrounded by steep-sided, forested cliffs that are at least 300m high. The view from the crater rim is one of the most appealing in northern Tanzania, but hiking down into the crater is a wonderful experience as well. You can make the walk, accompanied by a ranger. Is really magical – being close to nature at best with sweeping views of the highlands.
It takes only a 30 minutes walk to descent into the crater through a thick, mountainous forest and an hour for the climb back up.
