Additional information

Chumbe Island is an award-winning private nature reserve. The reserve includes a fully protected coral reef sanctuary and forest reserve that harbour rare wildlife, a visitor and education centre, a small eco-lodge, nature walks and historical monuments. All buildings and operations are based on eco-technology aiming at zero impact on the environment.

Accommodation on Chumbe Island is – in many aspects – something really special. It’s what Robinson Crusoe could only have dreamt about!

The island’s accommodation and guest lodge are constructed with environmentally friendly architecture and are designed to have near zero impact on the environment. The technology includes rainwater catchment, photovoltaic energy, solar water heating, composting toilets and vegetative greywater filtration. Hence, during your stay you can rest assured that you are keeping the island pristine. Since there are only seven bungalows, the island never gets crowded, even when fully booked. The bungalows are so brilliantly designed that they provide both privacy and a sense of freedom of living in the open. All bungalows overlook the sea and it takes just 30 seconds to stroll from the comforts of your bungalow hammock to feeling the warm tropical ocean lapping at your feet.

Day trips to the Island include boat transport to and from the island, fresh lunch on the island, soft drinks and snacks, guide and equipment for snorkeling, snorkeling on one of East Africa’s most diverse coral reef, guided walk through the forest trails and inter-tidal area (if low tide), access to climb to the top of a historic lighthouse and a tour of an eco-bungalow.
