The last remnants of the ancient city of Kua lay nestled among the overgrown forests in the south of Juani Island, part of the Mafia Archipelago. The ruins date back to the 12th century, but it’s not clear why the city ceased to exist. Experience the spooky but beautiful ambience of these ruins, with the cries of birds in the fading afternoon light and vervet monkeys scampering among the crumbling ruins smothered by the roots of strangler figs.
